Joomla?

Joomla! is a content management system (CMS) that runs on a web server.

With Joomla, you can build websites independently of your operating system. Joomla has been around since 2006 and grew out of the CMS Mambo. A CMS makes it easy to update websites and their content. The website's content is stored in a database, the Joomla framework takes care of functionality, and the template, views, and layouts take care of the design.

Who is behind Joomla?

Joomla is backed by a nonprofit association called Open Source Matters, and as the name suggests, Joomla is "open source" – meaning everything that happens around Joomla is carried by volunteer, unpaid contributors. The system itself is therefore available as a free download, and your only costs are for programming and setting up the website, plus any costs for extensions. The idea is that everyone who benefits from it can "give something back" in some form.

How many websites use Joomla?

Joomla is used worldwide by over 5.1% of websites that use a content management system. Expressed in numbers, that's even more fascinating: over 2.5 million websites run on Joomla.

What are the advantages of Joomla over other systems?

The advantage of Joomla is the system's high level of built-in functionality (its core). With other systems like WordPress, you don't get very far without extensions and plugins – with Joomla, on the other hand, you have a highly scalable system that manages without any third-party extensions for normal use.

Joomla is also one of the most secure CMS platforms. So-called "security patches" are released regularly, making the system even more secure against attackers.

Where can I learn more about Joomla?

Joomla conferences take place around the world every year. The next Joomla World Conference will take place on 16–18 October 2027 in Potsdam.
